Liverpool is one of the UK’s largest and most famous cities, known around the world for being the birthplace of The Beatles. It’s also home to one of the world’s largest football teams – Liverpool FC.
It also has a large number of listed buildings and heritage sites as well as museums and art galleries. That’s not to mention all the shops, restaurants, bars and cafes to be found across the city. When you take all this into account, it’s not hard to see why Liverpool is one of the most desirable areas to live in the UK.
In this article, we’ll be covering some of the best areas to live in Liverpool but before we do, let’s take a look at some of the cultural highlights the city has to offer.

- Tate Liverpool – Tate Liverpool is one of the best art galleries in the UK, with a huge collection of classic and contemporary art as well as hosting a number of unique exhibitions every year. It’s not just the inside of the gallery that’s of interest though, the building itself is incredibly striking due to being a former warehouse that was converted by James Sterling.
- The Beatles Story – The Beatles are by far the most famous thing associated with Liverpool. People the world over know of the band and travel to Liverpool to visit The Beatles Story. An interactive experience that gives you the chance to experience the 60s as well as some of the most famous places associated with The Beatles, such as The Cavern, The Beatles Story is a must if you’re a fan of the band or just a music fan in general.
- Sefton Park – Liverpool is a vibrant and bustling city but if you want to get away from it all, then Sefton Park provides an ideal retreat. The first thing you notice is the striking glass building that has Grade 1 listed status. In addition to the huge expanse of green areas, there are also waterfalls, hidden caves and botanical gardens.
- Liverpool Cathedral – Even if you’re not a religious person, Liverpool Cathedral is an awe-inspiring building. With construction beginning in 1904, it’s one of the more modern cathedrals in the country but it has a rich history nonetheless and is absolutely worth visiting. There are also a number of art exhibitions held there throughout the year.
- Bold Street – Liverpool has an abundance of recognisable high-street shops but if you’re looking for something more unique, Bold Street is where you should head. Home to a number of independent shops and boutiques, it’s ideal if you’re looking for second-hand books, unique art pieces or fashionable clothes that aren’t from a major retailer.
- Liverpool Philharmonic – Liverpool is a city famous for its music and Liverpool Philharmonic lives up to that reputation. Although it’s often associated with orchestral music, Liverpool Philharmonic hosts all types of music concerts, from pop to folk to rock. The building itself is incredibly impressive too, with the spacious concert hall being the highlight.

Now let’s take a look at some of the best places to live in Liverpool.
Ropewalks
Ropewalks is a great choice of place to live if culture is important to you. There is a live music district with multiple clubs and it’s also home to Liverpool’s Chinatown, with plenty of great places to eat and drink.
There are also some great bars in Ropewalks, such as The Merchant as well as an interactive museum, a multi-screen cinema and a large number of independent stores, restaurants and cafes.
With so much going on, it would make an ideal choice for young professionals and young couples. There are plenty of flats available to rent and buy and the prices are quite affordable too.
Chinatown
Much like Ropewalks, Chinatown is a great place to live if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere and plenty going on all the time. Located in the city centre, there is an abundance of great restaurants and bars all on your doorstep as well as supermarkets.
The area has seen a lot of renovation in recent years and has become a very highly desirable place to live in the city. The welcoming community helps to add to the unique atmosphere of the area too.
The downside to Chinatown is that there aren’t a huge number of properties there, with the area itself being quite small. That being said – if you have your heart set on living there, it’s absolutely possible to find somewhere that’s right for you.
Crosby
Located to the north of the city centre, Crosby is another area that’s seen a lot of redevelopment in recent years. It has a number of natural spaces for walking as well as sports venues, theatres and museums, so it’s ideal for young professionals as well as families.
Another great thing that Crosby has going for it is its beach, which makes it a perfect place to live during the summer. It’s also close to the city centre, so if you need to commute, it’s very convenient.
Property prices are quite reasonable in Crosby and there are a number of different houses and flats available to rent and buy.
Anfield
Anfield would make a good choice if you’re moving to Liverpool with a family. There are many excellent schools in the area and it has a friendly atmosphere and plenty of places to walk in nature, such as Newsham Park.
Anfield is the home to both of the city’s football clubs too, so you can always be sure of a lively atmosphere, especially on match days.
Overall, the affordable property prices, large number of amenities and great schools make Anfield an ideal choice if you’re moving to Liverpool for the first time.
Islington
Islington is a city that’s had plenty of redevelopment over the years and continues to, so it’s an excellent place to invest in property as it’s only likely to increase in value.
It’s not quite as hectic as places like Chinatown or Ropewalks, so it would make a great choice for families. There are also plenty of things to see and do, with multiple parks, great schools and easy access to the city centre thanks to excellent public transport.
An advantage of Islington being a comparatively quiet area is that property there is very affordable, whether you’re looking for a house or a flat.
The Georgian Quarter
Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter is certainly one of the more upmarket places in the city, with plenty of classy bars, restaurants and cafes.
It’s safe and quiet while still having a lot to offer for both young professionals and families. It’s also home to the Royal Philharmonic Hall, so if you’re a music lover, it’s ideally located.
Being an upmarket area, the property prices in the Georgian Quarter are considerably higher than a lot of other areas in the city, so this is worth bearing in mind.
Kirkdale
Lastly is Kirkdale. Kirkdale is an ideal choice for families as it’s a relatively quiet residential area that’s also very safe.
There has been plenty of regeneration in Kirkdale in recent years and it’s home to some excellent primary and secondary schools. There are also a good number of parks, shops, restaurants, bars and cafes in the local area.
Although it’s not quite as exciting as some of the other areas we’ve looked at, it’s a very affordable place to buy or rent property and is also relatively close to the city centre.
